 Hammons Happenings - Winter 2008

Dear Praying Friends:

The Lord has wonderful ministry opportunities ahead in store for MTM - Fort Bragg/Pope AFB for 2008! 2 Tim 4:5 says "watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry".  Our desire is to strive for excellence in service to our Lord throughout the year!  Please pray for us!

Departures 2007

*Cassi & Adam left a huge void in our lives when the Lord transferred them to Germany. They welcomed their firstborn, Joshua, in December.  Continue to pray for their spiritual growth.

* Brandon & Alycia were happily reunited after a 15 month deployment. They moved to Florida right after Christmas and we miss them dearly! Please pray that they will find a solid church and grow in their faith.

Soldiers/Airmen on our Radar

* Chris and Joshua have returned from Iraq and are going through one-on-one discipleship materials with Earl.

* New Couples:  Derek & Kassi and Jesse & Aimee: Derek is in the Air Force and Jesse is just home from Iraq to join his newlywed bride. Pray that we will be an encouragement to them.

Current Ministries

* Saturday Night Home Bible Study:  After a study through Matthew, we are now in a series entitled "In the Dust of the Rabbi".  We started the year with a new emphasis on discipleship, Scripture memorization and a missions spotlight!

* Crossroads Coffeehouse - There has been noticeable increase in attendance and therefore more opportunities to witness and counsel individuals who have served in Afghanistan or Iraq. Pray for Rudy, who is struggling physically (wounds) and spiritually after his return from Iraq.

* The Excellent Wife Bible Study - Linda finished Martha Peace's material with Alycia and Shannon in December.  They both profited from the study...pray for lifelong fruit in all three lives and homes!

* Ladies Bible Study - Linda is presently assisting a class on "Spiritual Readiness Groups" on Biblical helps for deployments.   A handful of these gals will attend a Spring Ladies Retreat with her!

Recent Events

* Fall Focus - Linda was privileged to participate in a military wives' convention in Nashville as a workshop speaker and spoke on "Biblical Hospitality". Tamra, Linda's "mutual mentor" friend, also went!

* NANC Christian Counseling Seminars - We completed three counseling seminars.  We often utilize what we have learned to help these precious military folks. One of the very helpful sessions focused on using the attributes of God in counseling.

Personal News

* Missions Class - The following question is now embedded deep in our hearts: "What did I do today for the cause of World Missions?"  The answer can be as simple as a specific prayer or financial giving or reading missionary biographies or sharing Christ at home!

* Earl's mother, Peggy, unexpectedly went to be with the Lord on December 15th.  We are so thankful for the Lord's comfort and all the wonderful, treasured memories. She received Christ as Savior 3 years ago when her pastor was burdened to visit her after a prolonged illness. When the Lord burdens our heart to witness to someone we never know the ramification of obedience to His leading!

Points for Prayer

* Future Military Christian Center - The site has been cleared. Submitting site plans and other paperwork to the city for approval is underway!!

* Our church, Cornerstone Baptist, has a new pastor, Gregory Odiorne, a former Army chaplain. Pray for him as he leads our congregation!

* Deployed: Allison, Shea, Christ, Kelly, Gary, Dave.

Grateful for you,

Dear Prayer Partners,

Our Saturday night Bible Study is currently going through the Gospel of Matthew. We have recently gleaned wonderful truths regarding prayer: Jesus disciples need to pray for Gods help. Petitions must be for His glory rather than for selfish ends. All that a disciple needs to serve Jesus Christ successfully is available for the asking. From Matthew 7:7, Jesus disciples are told to pray (ask) with earnest sincerity (seek) and active, diligent pursuit of Gods way (knock). What a privilege it continues to be to share Gods Word with the military at Fort Bragg!

RECENT NEWS & EVENTS

Holiday Blessings A young girl from New York sent numerous homemade gifts to be shared with military brides.

Pictured here is the group of recipients waiting to open their treasures. Thanks to Kelsey and her mom, Ronnie, for their loving concern!

Ongoing Deployments Massive overseas assignments from Fort Bragg continue to be in the forefront of peoples minds. Nearly every week, there is a front page article about a soldier or two from Bragg who have lost their lives. The deployment ministry continues to fill our days with unexpected opportunities to help those struggling with the separation. For example, Linda left a Valentine gift bag at the door of an Army bride whose husband is overseas. The email reply says: Linda-Thank you so much for your Valentine's package. It made my day. I cried like a baby when I opened it. It is so nice to know that you care. Its a privilege to encourage these families.

Wedding & Baby Showers There have been an unusual number of milestone events here of late! Weddings and babies are such a joy. The passing of grandmothers has been difficult. We seek to encourage these young adults to focus on the Lords Hand in the ups and downs of life. Christine gave a wonderful devotional at Stephanies baby shower (pictured at right) on the importance of raising children for the Lord.

Bridge Builders The focus of our church this year is Leading Others to Heaven in 2007. The first weekend of March was Bridge Builders Sunday. Pastor Pat Haynes was the special speaker as he shared a simple format whereby an entire church can evangelize together utilizing the tract Gods Bridge to Eternal Life. We are praying for much growth in our lives and fruit for labors in the realm of evangelism this year!

WEEKLY MINISTRIESsardines_-_web

Home Bible Study - Over the last few weeks we have felt like sardines in our home(pictured at right) ! Upon discussing the possibility of a move to a bigger facility, the overwhelming response was to remain in the home atmosphere & enjoy the very close quarters. We thank the Lord that when one of our men or women deploy, He brings others to our Bible Study!

Ladies Bible Studies - Linda has taught The Abundant Life numerous times. This spring, she found an Army bride eager to learn how to teach. Linda is now mentoring Tamra as she teaches this class on post! Linda is also leading a study on developing a heart like Gods at church. Several women have commented on the value of this study in their walk with the Lord.

INDIVIDUALS IN OUR MIDST

New Visitors - Abby was invited to our Bible study by Alycia. Their husbands Brad & Brandon are currently deployed to Iraq. Both gals are enjoying a parenting class at our home church. Allison is learning Arabic and seeking to learn about God. Andres recently arrived at Fort Bragg from Advanced Infantry School and Earl has been spending time with him.

Green Ramp Here I Come By the time you read this letter, Adam and Cassi will, Lord willing, be happily reunited following a one year deployment! Cassi has been a huge blessing to our ministry and we look forward to having Adam with us soon!

Joshua and RJ went through Advanced Infantry Training together and arrived at Fort Bragg at the same time. Joshua is assigned to the 82nd and left for Iraq in February. R.J. got married last month. We've loved having both of them at the house often!

Hebrews 4:16

Hammons Happenings - Winter 2006

The first chapter of Hebrews speaks of Jesus as the brightness of (Gods) glory. How we long for the military here at Fort Bragg & Pope Air Force Base to find God in the person of Jesus!

RECENT NEWS & EVENTS

Armor of God Study - Linda has concluded her class on Ephesians 6:10-20.  Each individual piece of armor was examined in depth & yielded powerful help for a victorious Christian life!

winter_2006_prayer_letter_-_5Bentonville Battlefield Trip - Phil, Brandon (at left) and Earl visited this National Park area located 45 minutes from Ft Bragg.  The soldiers enjoyed learning more about the Civil War and comparing it to present day events. It was during this battle that Earls great grandfather was captured by Union forces.

Homecoming at Appalachian Bible College - Linda was privileged to be a workshop leader and spoke on the subject of "Hospitality's Heart".  She focused on reaching out to strangers with the love of Jesus.  The hearers were encouraged to evaluate their current ministries of hospitality, making sure to consider that hospitality & entertainment are not the same thing!

"Fundamentals of Biblical Counseling" Seminar - Military men and women face so many problems and we need to sharpen our counseling skills. A three weekend seminar sponsored by the National Association of Nouthetic Counselors (NANC) afforded us that opportunity! We often spend many hours at Barnes & Noble chatting with soldiers/wives and have already implemented the material that was covered at the conference! retreat_to_abc_10-06

"Retreat to the Mountains" - We traveled with Brandon (an 82nd soldier preparing to deploy to Iraq), Cassi (husband in Afghanistan til 2/07), AlyciaIraq til 8/07) and her 2 year old, to WV and the campus of Appalachian Bible College for our "Retreat to the Mountains"! Brandon is praying about future training for the ministry, so he and Earl took a side trip to PiedmontBible College for a little visit.    Two Bible study sessions (photo at left) were taught by Pastor Pat Haynes on "Maturing on the Mountaintop of Adoration" (Exodus 33). The study on the grace of God led to various questions and comments on this vital subject for all our lives. Other highlights of the weekend included games, tour of ABC campus and Harvest Fest at a local church where Cassi and Brandon bobbed for apples! WEEKLY BIBLE STUDIES

Tuesday Ladies Bible Study - Linda is teaching "The Abundant Life" (Basic Christian Discipleship) course again with 6 students.  The questions they ask reveal that they are seeking to grow in their faith!  For example: "Is God really there with He seems silent?"  "What is the difference between a trial and a temptation?"  "Do you think every single Christian will have a long desert experience in their life?"  A recent visitor had never read the Bible at all, so we were able to teach her how to look up verses and are now praying for her salvation!

Saturday Home Bible Study (Currently studying Matthew) Rory is a University of Southern California (USC) faculty member (in purple shirt) who found our ministry on the Internet! A writer who wanted to learn more about the military, she made a trip to Fort Bragg and included our Bible study in her itinerary! She informally interviewed our attendees to learn more about present day life as an active duty soldier!

Crossroads Christian Coffeehouse Earl recently spoke on 1 Samuel 15. He emphasized that the cost of disobedience far outweighs the cost of obedience.

Local Bible College Class - Earl just finished the fall session of another counseling course at Carolina BibleCollege this fall. It has afforded him opportunities to meet & work with veterans.

Focus on Fort Bragg - August 2006
Greetings from North Carolina!

With some recent training from Wes Yerkes, we are developing our computer literacy skills!  Our goal is to utilize this page as a place where you, our friends and faithful supporters, can visit for up-to-date news!  For our first web-update, we would like to share the following news items with you!

*  HOME BIBLE STUDY - Last month, a professor from USC found our ministry on this website.  She works in the cinema division of the Fine Arts School and is writing a screenplay about a soldier who is new to the Army and just learns he is going to Iraq.  So, she came to Fort Bragg to do some research for her story and attended our Bible study!  If you see a made-for-TV movie on this subject in the future, some of the character may be based on our Saturday Night Attendees!  It was fun to watch them being interviewed by her!

*  DEPLOYMENTS -  6,500 troops are heading to Iraq in the weeks ahead.  This has a far reaching impact on our community.  It affects our church and our minstry.  It leaves wives/mothers without hubby/daddy for a full year.  There are many situations that are very difficult for these families at this time.  Please pray for our troops' safety, for the families left behind and for the salvation and spiritual growth of all.
linda_and_cassie
*  "CASSI QUESTIONS" - Cassi (pictured at right) is a precious young woman whose husband is in  Afghanistan.  In fact, we laugh alot together about this fact.....for weeks, Earl and Linda prayed for "John in Iraq" (Cassi's husband or so we thought).  Eventually, Cassi realized that we were praying for her husband....only he is "Adam in Afghanistan" !  Well, Cassi is a real blessing to us.  Her newfound faith in Jesus is contagious.  She comes over to Bible study early on many nights with a list of questions from her Bible reading.  Many of them are quite thought-provoking and it is a delight to try and assist her in her spiritual growth!  Please pray for this dear couple who will be apart until next March.

*  OH BABY!   - One couple attending our Bible studies has been having some major challenges with their first pregnancy.  The wife has been to the hospital multiple times for rehydration and overnight stays.  Just this week, it seems that she is feeling much better, so we are hopeful that this well-being will last the rest of the pregnancy.  Meanwhile, we have been helping with meals and housework and in much prayer for the couple to be growing in their faith through this difficult time.

*  PRAY FOR ED - Earl met Ed on Fort Bragg a few weeks ago. Ed responded to the invitation to come to our home for Bible study and to church the next day.  He had just reported to Fort Bragg for assignment, but due to boot camp and schools, he has not seen his family for 11 months.  Then this past week, he learned he is deploying for one year to Iraq.  This was unexpected for him, yet not unexpected for those who are assigned to Bragg these days!  He will have 10 days of leave to go to Texas to see wife and 2 year old daughter, then he will deploy.  Please pray for this situation.

*  FALL MINISTRIES - We are in the planning stages of various ministries that will kick off in September.....these include Ladies Bible study, A Fall Retreat to WV, New Studies for Saturday Night Bible Study.  Earl is always trying to find likeminded chaplains who would like Bible studies in the barracks or dining facilities.

Well, that is a brief peek at just some of the goings-on here at the Hammons' Home.

Check back to this page soon!

Hammons' Happenings - June 2006

Dear Friends of the Military,

We have so many wonderful things to share with you that we hardly know where to start!  The Lord has blessed us with an overwhelming number of ministry opportunities this winter-spring!  First of all, we want to thank you for your steadfast prayers and faithful encouragement to us all along the way.  This ministry remains a team effort and we continually give thanks to the Lord for our supporters and caring friends!

RECENT NEWS and EVENTS

Easter Season Seven Last Sayings of Jesus on the Cross We hosted a special Bible study at EasterEarl reviewed the words which Jesus uttered as He was being crucified for the sins of all mankind.  One attendee commented that they had never looked at the Cross from such a perspective!

 mtm_visit_to_ft_bragg_property

Special Site Visits The Lord has brought some special visitors this spring!  The CLARK FAMILY from upstate New York visited both FortBragg and MTM Headquarters as part of a recent family vacation.  The Lord is burdening their heart to be more involved in missionary work and they have a real heart for the military.  They were a blessing to us during their time here!  Later, Board Members from MTM Headquarters (pictured at right) made a call on Fort Bragg to survey the property on which we hope to build a Military ChristianCenter in the coming days.  We have also met with several contractors regarding site prep on the MTM property located one-half mile outside a main Fort Bragg gate!

Traveling Training A day long womens training event on Fort Bragg focused on Servant Leadership and Developing Listening Skills.  Linda was so pleased that four women from her Bible study also attended with herour prayer is for each of these precious women to grow and mature in their faith!

bible_making_pyr_ltrBible Making (pictured at left)- At the end of March, our church compiled 20,000 copies of the Gospel of John/ Romans in the Romanian language.  Our pastor arranged this event through BEARING PRECIOUS SEED MINISTRIES. We worked at various stations, each one dedicated to a stage of the compilation process.  It was a fantastic way to grow closer as a church family while participating in missions tangibly at the same time!!  There was a job for all ages.  What a joy to see the finished products all boxed up for shipping!  The Bibles will be sent to missionaries in Romania for distribution to many who have never held the Word of God.  At this time, BPS Ministries have all materials needed to compile thousands more Biblesthey need manpower to get them ready for shipping.  If you would like to invite this ministry to come to your church, please contact us or visit www.bpsmilford.org.

Chapel Services  - What do a shovel, flashlight and high intensity work lamp have to do with chapel?   Everything..that is, if you are going to hunt for the treasure of the Gospel!  Earl shared such a message at a local Christian school chapel this spring.  Linda spoke to the high school girls with a series entitled: A Worthy Walk.

WEEKLY MINISTRIES

Ladies Bible Study on Fort Bragg Linda taught a semester long class on The Abundant Life using Ray Baughmans book.  Eight ladies attended and all but one completed the class!  Two women made professions of faith and all are eager to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord!  Lindas delight has been frequent phone calls to answer all kinds of questions about the Christian life and the Bible as they worked on their weekly assignmentsquestions like How do I share my faith with my mom who is living a very sinful life? to Can you explain baptism to me? to My brother was killed in a car wreck and someone told me it was because I didnt pray right for himdo you think that is true?.  At this time, the plan is to continue with a summer study on the I AMs from the Gospel of John!

Fort Bragg Coffeehouse There has been an increase in attendance at the Friday Coffeehouse on Fort Bragg  The status of the Coffeehouse is unknown in the face of future deployments later this year that will take several brigades overseas. Pictured at left is Earl with Brandon Moore, who is in charge of the coffeehouse. and a greater spiritual interest, too.

Saturday Home Bible Study We have experienced an upswing in attendance!  This winter, Earl addressed Critical Social Issues Confronting Believers to examine various world concerns and the biblical response. Then we studied Nahum and the attributes of God. Presently we are studying Habakkuk and focusing on the question of good and evil as well as living by faith.  Resumed weekly dinners before study are popular and the young brides love to try new recipes and bring them along.  We have had a record number of one time visitors come and, of course, we always pray they will return!

Ladies Sunday School Linda is teaching through Ephesians 6:10-20 on the Armor of God.  The class explores each piece of armor in detail then strives to make practical application in areas in which women seem particularly vulnerable to the fiery darts of the wicked.

Local Headlines - Recent headlines report more deployments in the future. The 3rd Brigade leaves this summer and the 82nd Airborne Divisions headquarters will leave for Afghanistan in the coming months.

Division Review This annual event is held at the end of May.  It is a very impressive display of the power of the 82nd Airborne. The keynote speaker this year was the Honorable Francis J Harvey, Secretary of the Army.

This event affords the opportunity to mingle freely with many troops to learn more about their military job and inquire about interest in church and such matters!

Memorial Day Service The Special Forces Association hosts an annual ceremony to commemorate the Special Force members who have died in the past year. We remain grateful for the sacrifices made to protect our freedoms.

INDIVIDUALS IN OUR MIDST

Probably the single most exciting news to share is that the Lord has blessed us this spring with a number of individuals who are truly eager to grow in their faith and with whom we spend time throughout each week!  Here are a few profiles.please pray for them by name!!

CASSI (pictured at right) is a newlywed bride whose husband, ADAM, is presently two months into a one year deployment to Afghanistan.  She brings much joy to our home and is constantly asking excellent questions based on her voracious reading of the Bible and her newfound faith!

DEVIN is an MP who is at church as often as his schedule permits and is able to join us for Bible study sporadically.  He is a quiet young man whose walk with the Lord seems genuine and we love to pray for him as he serves our country in a difficult position.

ALYCIA (pictured at left) is also an Army wife whose husband will soon be heading to Iraq. She has been a student in Lindas study and is one of the most contagiously upbeat people we have ever met.  She has been through a lot of very difficult situations in her young life and is open to Gods Hand.

JEREMY recently married his sweetheart, JESSICA. He will deploy at the end of summer for another year in Iraq. You may recall that Jeremys faith grew by leaps and bounds as you prayed for him through his last deployment.  He is now enrolled in online Bible College and open to fulltime ministry in the future!

BRANDON (at right) Since our last prayer letter, we were privileged to attend the Green Ramp return of Brandons unit from Iraq.  This young paratrooper deeply loves the Lord and is seeking to serve Him well in the Army.  Pray for Brandons witness to his comrades.

PHIL & STEPHANIE  Phil arrived home safely after one full year in Iraq!  He and Stephanie have rejoined our Saturday Bible Studies.  In Lindas class, Stephanie was able to become more grounded in her faith and expressed to Linda that an example of how to have devotions was revolutionary for her.  Less than a week later, Stephanie came over with a list of questions from her study in Proverbs...I am getting so much more out of my Quiet Time.  It is so exciting! They are a precious couple in our lives!

JESSE & SUSANNAH visited our church a few times and we were able to spend some time with them for fellowship and in their home.  When looking at wedding pictures with Susannah, Linda was delightfully surprised to discover that the officiating pastor was a classmate of Earls!

KATIE, NOEL and JEN have been a huge blessing to Linda. They were in her Fall Bible Study and have remained on her weekly radar.  Each of these women are married to senior officers in crucial positions.  They shoulder a lot of responsibility as they serve the country alongside their husbands!  We seek to encourage them in their faith and at the same time, they teach us a lot about Army life!

PASTOR WES MCGUIRE (right) is settling into the leadership of our church.  He has a passion for the Lord and a love for Gods Word that inspires us and we look forward to all the Lord desires to accomplish in this next season of our churchs life.
